Airbnb Stays vs Experiences vs Services: Which Hosting Track Actually Fits Your Life?

Updated May 2026 | 10 min read | Getting Started

Most people hear "Airbnb host" and picture someone renting out a house. That was true for 17 years. It's not anymore.

In 2025, Airbnb launched two entirely new hosting categories — Experiences and Services — alongside the original Stays program. Together, they've turned the platform from a place-to-sleep marketplace into something closer to a lifestyle platform with three distinct on-ramps for earning money.

The question isn't whether to host on Airbnb. It's which track makes sense for what you already have: a property, a passion, or a profession. This guide breaks down all three side by side so you can pick the right one without second-guessing it.

Stays — Share Your Space

The Original Airbnb

This is the hosting track most people think of: you have a property (or part of one), and guests pay to sleep there. It's also where the biggest money is — median US Airbnb income sits around $2,400/month, with top-performing hosts in resort markets clearing $100,000+ annually.

What you can list: entire homes, apartments, condos, private rooms in your house, unique spaces (treehouses, yurts, A-frames, cabins, boats), and — new for 2025/26 — boutique hotels and B&Bs.

Who this is for: empty nesters with spare rooms, vacation property owners who don't use the place year-round, frequent travelers whose apartment sits empty, real estate investors, anyone with a unique or photogenic space.

What it takes: a furnished, guest-ready space, photos, a listing, cleaning between guests, and responsiveness to messages. Airbnb handles payments, provides $1M host liability insurance, and gives you tools for pricing, messaging, and scheduling. Since December 2025, most hosts are on a 15.5% host-only fee structure — meaning guests see transparent pricing with no added service fee.

The catch: Stays have the highest startup cost of the three tracks. You need a property, you need it furnished and photo-ready, and you need a cleaning system. The ongoing work — guest communication, turnovers, maintenance — is real. But it's also the highest-revenue track by a wide margin.

Experiences — Lead an Activity

No Property Needed

Airbnb Experiences let you host curated activities for travelers and locals. You don't need a property — you need expertise, local knowledge, and a plan. Think cooking classes, walking tours, photography workshops, surf lessons, wine tastings, historical deep-dives, yoga sessions, or street art tours.

Relaunched in 2025 after a full rebuild, Experiences now span 650+ cities across 19 categories. Nature and outdoor activities are the top-booked category, with food and drink close behind. Nearly half of all Experience bookings are standalone — guests booking activities in cities where they aren't staying at an Airbnb.

Who this is for: local experts, history buffs, foodies, outdoor guides, artists, musicians, yoga instructors, anyone with a passion they can teach or share. The most-booked Experiences tend to be the most personal and hands-on — a croissant-baking class in Paris, a lucha libre training session, a hidden-pub crawl.

What it takes: an application that demonstrates your expertise and local knowledge, a detailed activity plan, quality photos, and the ability to deliver a consistent, engaging experience. Airbnb reviews each submission for quality.

The catch: your income is capped by how many sessions you can physically run. It's time-for-money — you show up every time. But startup costs are near zero, and Airbnb's audience of 200M+ registered users does the marketing for you. About 1 in 3 Experience bookers go on to book a Stay within 90 days, which tells you the platform is actively investing in cross-selling.

Services — Bring Your Profession

Newest Track — Launched 2025

Airbnb Services is the newest of the three tracks and the one most people don't know about yet. It connects vetted professionals — chefs, photographers, massage therapists, personal trainers, hair stylists, makeup artists — directly with guests through the Airbnb app.

The key difference from Experiences: Services are professional, on-demand, and one-on-one. A chef cooks a private dinner in a guest's rental. A photographer shoots a family portrait session. A massage therapist shows up for an in-home deep-tissue session. And critically, you don't need to be connected to any property — anyone can book you, including locals who aren't traveling at all.

The 10 launch categories: chefs, prepared meals and catering, photography, massage, spa treatments, personal training, hair, makeup, and nails. Available in 260 cities and expanding. Service providers average 10+ years of experience and must complete identity verification and submit relevant licenses and certifications.

Who this is for: licensed professionals who already do this work and want a new booking channel. If you're a freelance photographer chasing invoices, a personal trainer hustling for clients, a licensed massage therapist paying for your own booking platform, or a private chef building a client base — Airbnb Services gives you instant access to a massive audience with built-in trust and payment processing.

What it takes: an application at airbnb.com/host/services, proof of credentials and licensing, identity verification, and enough experience to pass Airbnb's vetting. Many services include an entry-level offering under $50, so you can attract first-time bookings at low risk.

The catch: it's currently limited to 260 cities and 10 categories. If you're not in an eligible city or your profession isn't one of the 10 categories yet, you'll need to wait. But Airbnb has committed $200–250M in investment to this vertical, and their Q1 2026 earnings call confirmed expansion is coming in the May 2026 summer release.

So Which One Should You Pick?

Forget the features for a second. The real question is: what do you already have?

🏠 "I have a space." → List a Stay. You have the asset — the question is just whether you're willing to manage guests and turnovers. Even a spare bedroom can generate $800–$2,000/month in the right market.

🎨 "I have a passion." → Host an Experience. If you know your city's hidden gems, can teach people to cook, paint, surf, or forage — and you enjoy being in front of people — Experiences let you monetize that knowledge with zero property overhead.

💼 "I have a profession." → Offer a Service. If you're already a licensed professional trading time for money, Airbnb Services is a new distribution channel that puts you in front of millions of potential clients without building a website or chasing invoices.

And there's nothing stopping you from doing more than one. A homeowner in Nashville could list their guest suite as a Stay, host a songwriting workshop as an Experience, and — if they're also a licensed massage therapist — offer in-home sessions as a Service. Three revenue streams, one platform.

Can You Stack Multiple Tracks?

Yes. Airbnb is actively encouraging this. Their Q1 2026 earnings report highlighted that nearly 25% of new guests who book an Experience go on to book a Stay or Service — and about 1 in 3 Experience bookers book a Stay within 90 days. The platform treats Experiences and Services as demand flywheels for the entire ecosystem.

If you're a Stay host, adding an Experience or Service to your profile creates cross-selling opportunities that don't require more property. If you're a Service provider, booking visibility increases when you're in a market with lots of Stay activity. The three tracks feed each other.
